Setting

Omens In Ashes takes place in the World of Noar, a vast expanse of continents home to many diverse races that have the capabilities of wielding unique arcanic power. While much of the world has been mapped to the best of the seafarers’ abilities, there are territories and oceans yet to be discovered by the mortal eye.

The setting as a whole revolves around an energy known as Esen. It is within all things, both living and dead, and can be manipulated with enough will, practice and creativity. Wild Esen is distorted energy, powerful and unbound to any specific domain. It corrupts all things, be that the land, the people, the body, mind, or soul. Due to this, there is a constant struggle of balance between the natural and unnatural. Some areas of the world lay barren of life because of Wild Esen while other places are plagued with monsters and enemies mutated and driven mad from this chaotic power.

Each established settlement struggles with its own obstacles and rarely will they look beyond their boundaries to involve themselves in other matters unless the stability of their foundations are threatened. Political corruption, trade and war, or tensions to spur it, will likely keep writers within their starting cities for a time. While travel is possible, there are dangers that arise from doing so and many who are ill prepared for their journeys will find their end sooner than those anticipating trouble— and there is almost always trouble.

What is natural to the people of Noar, may not always seem logical or make sense to writers. Remember that this is a fantasy/medieval setting and, while some ideas are based on reality, others may seem a little far-fetched. Technology within Noar is based on medieval practices and should the boundaries be tested, they must involve the use of arcana rather than realistic procedure to use, succeed at, or produce a positive outcome. Not every person or place appeared pleasantly or smelled decently in medieval times, and they lacked many things that we consider common place to have in the modern age. At Omens, we ask that all writers keep this setting in mind and if you have any questions, feel free to ask Rune or Spire on Discord or at the Help Desk.
