Historically, Wendell’s only known affiliation has been the Harbinger Crew, led by Eyrem Vur’res (before his death in K18), an Ecrede Pirate Captain better known to most as "The Bone Collector."
Wendell appears human by all accounts. He has no understanding of his true race or beginnings. Wendell poses as an Ecrede, using Shapeshifting Magic to mimic the race's ability to change their eye colour with their emotions. He has been doing this for many years and has become quite convincing.
Wendell is in his early thirties (33). He cuts an imposing figure, standing at six feet and change. He weighs just under two hundred and twenty pounds and towers over most people he comes into contact with, sporting the stature of a bodybuilder. Top heavy, with strong arms, Wendell has no trouble swinging an axe for hours, in fact, he enjoys it. His hair is dark, ranging from a very inky shade of brown in the winter to a dirty blonde in the summer, dependent on how much sun he gets. When left uncut it grows in loose waves that curl at the ends and around his ears. His beard is black at the roots and lighter at its ends, almost resembling a copper colour in some lights, if left to grow out.
The man has a hard face with gentle frown-lines, the most prominent of which are visible at the centre of his brow, edge of his eyes and the frame of his full lips. He doesn't smile a lot for strangers, but those he considers friends will find that it isn't difficult to soften that hard resolve. Both his nose and teeth are straight, despite his love of fist fights, with his lips often pointed out as his most attractive feature by those of the opposite sex. Wendell has blue-green eyes that look hazel in the sunlight. His complexion is fair, though his skin tends to tan during the hot seasons, darkening significantly.
A number of recognisable marks on the man's face and body make him difficult to forget, the most prominent of these being the black sea-serpent tattoo on the left side of his neck, the body of which winds about a sword before snaking back on itself. This tattoo is significant for two reasons, one being that it hides old slave brandings (Northern quarter and Blackbrine 8), and the other to promote the Ecrede Clan he is linked to via Eyrem Vur’res. A light scar through the tail edge of his right brow and a red mark under his chin compliment his rough and ready appearance.
Other distinguishing scars, marks and tattoos include a small crossbones scarification design hidden under his right arm against the side of his chest and a intricate kraken that takes up a lot of realestate on his back and shoulders.
Wendell doesn't suffer any physical impairments and, thought he looks like a brute, his scent isn't displeasing, his odor that of sea-salt and sweat, a strange yet not displeasing musk. He does, however, struggle with written word, finding it difficult to interpenetrate letters and read in common. Wendell's voice has often been described as gruff, low and raspy. He has mastered answering almost any question with a grunt.
Prone for making decisions that feel right at the time, Wendell has often been described as a man without conviction. He has no strong feelings regarding right and wrong, or good versus evil and, though he prefers to live in a just society ruled by those who are firm, but fair, he is uncommitted to upholding the world's ideologies of what is considered good in any abstract or universal way. Instead, Wendell might best be described as an advocate for balance, often favouring the side of the underdog, which like the tide, is ever changing. He believes that all life, governments, agendas, and systems are temporary, and that nature always prevails, whether that is the nature of the land, or that of mankind.
Good, evil, law, chaos, all these things are required in some measure to maintain balance, and though Wendell would never deem himself the man to maintain that balance, he is able to be swayed towards certain causes if the end result will see the scales equalled. Therefore, he is usually unlikely to act or concern himself in matters that have little to do with him unless he can determine without fail that the balance in some way has been threatened.
Wendell is concerned with himself first and those who are just to his cause, second. He has been known to help his allies and only act against those he considers himself close to if they have caused him injury or harm in some way. For all those who fall outside of his circle, Wendell will show little concern. Better the world he can't see, burn, than the one he knows. Thus, the man will not act just because he feels obliged to do so, but because to not act, might impact or alter his current way of living. Though he can appear very non-committal in many ways, Wendell does not lack ambition, passion or interest. He will follow the law of the land and its people unless it goes against his best interests and would never betray a loved one, family member, or friend, unless circumstances were extreme.
He does not seek authority over others and believes that a kindness should always be repaid. Wendell values family but won't always heed their requests. Though he would never harm others for gold, he believes people deserve the lives they are willing to endure. Wendell keeps few friends, and is unlikely to ever betray them. He avoids lies and extreme viewpoints, and will honour those who show him honour in return.
Wendell, in his own words:
People suck.

Born in the Age of Man, Wendell experienced a rather lawless upbringing. This mother was a whore, selling herself to anyone with enough coin to spend the night, while his father was a constant absent figure in his life. His mother never spoke about the man, going only as far as to tell her son that he had been a sailor. Wendell never resented the fact that he had no male role model in his life, as many of the street children he played with were in the same boat.
His mother rented a room from an unkind man named Shaheer, who used to accept favours whenever Da'la couldn't make rent. He smelled of goat cheese and stale sweat, a scent that haunted Wendell throughout his early years. Shaheer was the man who purchased Wendell when he was first sold into slavery as a boy of seven years. The deal didn't last long, with Wendell trying to run away every chance he got. It wasn't much later before he was sold again, this time to the cruel owners of a local bathhouse.
Wendell refers to such years as 'the breaking' for he truly believes his spirit was broken during this time. Each time he made a mistake or refused to do something for a customer, he was cut in plain sight of the other slaves, often used in demonstration of what would happen if new slaves broke the rules. By the time he was in his teen years, all the light in Wendell's ocean eyes was gone. He walked and talked and did as he was told without complaint, but still punishment found him.
By the time he was fourteen, Wendell had remade himself, using Shapeshifting Magic to completely change his appearance. He made himself appear shorter in order to blend into the crowd, dulled the colour of his blue-green eyes to dirty shades of brown and yellow. Even the tips of his ears were pointed, just like the Ecrede sailors he used to watch down by the docks. He didn't have to be Wendell the slave beyond the walls of the bathhouse where no one recognised him. Out in the streets of Nejem, he could be anyone he wanted to be. Shapeshifting became second nature and soon, he didn't even have to focus on the small edits, upholding them even in rest.
"What's an Ecrede boy doing so far from home?" A stranger's voice had asked one day in the marketplace.
Wendell had dared to look up, finding himself in the shadow of Eyrem Vur'res, better known to the people of Nejem as 'The Bone Collector.'
Eyrem had taken the boy by the jaw and turned his head to find a slave mark. "My people in chains?" The tall man had said, "that just won't do."
Wendell was purchased by the man that morning, all too aware that his facade was the only thing that had earned him his freedom from the wicked owners of the bathhouse. For the next ten years, he worked hard aboard the Harbinger Ship, upholding the exhausting charade. Only in dreams could he escape the magic, though even his dreams offered very little of that.
Ten years of work aboard the Harbinger earned the young man his freedom in Blackbrine, the City that Sailed. Of course, he was unaware that the mark he was branded with would forever make him a target of the law. Even ex-Blackbrine-slaves were considered pirates in most parts, knowing far too much of the inner workings of such a lucrative city.
In the same year he was set free, Wendell met a young woman by the name of Harper Raen, not the first to share his bed, but by far the most memorable. The pair fell into a passionate and rather fiery relationship, always at each other's throats, only to kiss and make up again days later. Based in Nejem, Harper got a job at a local tavern after her mother kicked her out for associating with pirates. Wendell saw to it that the woman was set up with a room and protection while he was away, spending a good deal of coin to ease the woman's woes.
Of course, leading the life of a pirate meant that he would see little of Harper in the coming years and, though she remained loyal, neither of them were faithful. Their relationship grew toxic and while both of them recognised they were better off without one another, there was something comforting about the familiarity of their routine, the fighting, the love-making and everything in between.
Eyrem, thinking himself a sort of father-figure, often warned Wendell against dating women, his displeasure for such creatures all too obvious. “You don’t hump crazy,” Eyrem once told him, “you marry it.” Even with the man’s blessing, Wendell was reluctant, sure the crew’s tendency to travel would only drive a deeper wedge between himself and Harper. Godless, wifeless and childless, Wendell made a decision to follow the crew, leaving his woman in Nejem. There was no point dragging out the inevitable, he thought.
With no formal education, Wendell knew he could never dream of bettering his circumstances, believing instead that he would be stuck working for the Harbinger Crew until the day he died, which out at sea, could have been any day soon. He was not expecting to meet the bright-eyed woman who would prove the catalyst for change in every aspect of his life, one who made him question everything he knew about himself. The Dre’kari woman shook his world to its very core, turning everything upside down.
Now, alone and with his whole life ahead of him and the freedom to choose which path he takes, Wendell has never felt quite so lost and yet, so alive. He is no longer a member of the Harbinger crew and with only fifty gold Krowns in his pocket, has decided to sail again, this time to the shores of Clead, keen to see where his travels will take him next.

Wendell has often been referred to as a man with very little ambition. In actuality, he dislikes making trouble for trouble's sake, and seldom rocks the boat. Growing up with little to no formal education taught that man to rely on other skills, such as trade, negotiation and debate. He can't quote an fancy historians or read much beyond his own chicken-scratch, but he is wise in other ways, having gained a lot more worldly experience than most. He does not shy away from a fight, even when the odds are stacked against him, nor does he drag people into his troubles who have no business being privy to them. ③- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
With the little downtime he gets, Wendell likes to spend his time renovating, usually tasked with repairs on the boat. He enjoys mindless tasks, able to lose himself, spending many hours killing time without entertaining a single thought. His main hobby, however, is drawing, something he can sit and do for hours. Wendell fears very little, leading him to believe that he is rather jaded with life at times. He does have on very irrational fear surrounding water, especially the ocean. Forced to swim, he is sure he could, though he has a reoccurring nightmare of being swept under the waves down into the deep, dark depths.

Wendell uses shape-shifting to alter his appearance, using it to change the shape of his ears and the colour of his eyes. He often keeps this up for long periods of time, leading to mild strain and persistent headaches. Wendell had been changing his appearance for so many years that it comes naturally now, able to keep up the facade with little effort.

Race: Human.
Nickname: Darling.
Relationship: Mother.
Known Magic: Illusion.
Statistics: Dead NPC.
Background: Standing at 5’9” Da'la was considered to be quite tall for a woman. She had a lean physique with very womanly curves and strong thighs. Her eyes were a warm hazel with flecks of green which lightened a few shades whenever she was upset. She always wore black eyeliner and would often spend hours beautifying herself in front of the mirror. Dark, silky hair stretched down the length of her back, thick, luscious and usually worn loose.
Adopted and raised by an Ecrede family, Da'la rebelled as a teenager and ran away from home when she was only thirteen years old. Da'la gave birth to Wendell three days after her nineteenth birthday. As a scarlet woman, Da'la spent her whole life entertaining men for money. In her youth most of these men were wealthy merchants, sailors and lords. However, as age began to creep up on her, she found herself competing with younger woman. The standard of men she accepted gold from in exchange for pleasure, was significantly lowered. This took its toll on the woman's mental health, during which time she became very depressed, neglecting her young son.
As a single parent, Da'la struggled to provide for her son, a boy with which she had little connection or motherly attachment to. When she could no longer afford to keep her lodgings in the city, Da'la sold her seven year old son into slavery. From there, things only got worse and the woman was forced to pack her things and relocate from Nejem, a city she had lived in her whole life, to Aramane. She was only thirty-two when she died of unknown causes.
⁌ Eyrem Vur'res ⁍
Race: Ecrede.
Nickname: The Bone Collector.
Relationship: Role-model.
Known Magic: Summoning.
Statistics: Dead NPC.
Background: Eyrem was but a humble slave trader when he exchanged a mere ten gold krowns for the purchase of Wendell, lifting the boy of fourteen years from poverty to work aboard his ship, The Harbinger. From there, Wendell was afforded the opportunity to learn the ropes, consistent in his attempts to impress the captain of the Harbinger vessel.
By the time Wendell turned twenty-four, he had earned his freedom, his slave markings burned away with the figure 8 brand of the Brineborn people. This mark was later hidden when Eyrem permitted Wendell to adopt his Clan Tattoo, a sea-serpent displayed in pride of place on the left side of the man's neck.
Eyrem's own tattoo took up the entire expanse of his back, complimented by the scarification tradition most Ecrede partake in. Raised skin formed the scales of the serpent, its eye sunken where flesh had been cut away. The captain was a tall, thin man with dark features, thick, long eyebrows, short, cropped black hair, and a long pointed nose. Though he had a seemingly kind nature and often wore an easy smile, Eyrem was a very cruel man who picked and chose his favourites of the crew, often treating them far better than the rest. Thankfully for Wendell, for the most part, this included him.

Relationship: Lover.
Known Magic: Blood.
Statistics: Free Story NPC.
Background: Harper, who prefers to go by the name Summer, has been in an on and off relationship with Wendell for the last nine years (K10). Being seven years younger than Wendell, Harper can be quick to anger, which often sets him off. They have turned arguing into an art, with some of their rows becoming quite heated. The pair never fight for long, however, always finding a reason to make up.
Harper is of average height, standing at 5'6". She has hazel coloured eyes that appear dark brown from a distance, growing far lighter the closer one gets. A long, straight nose and prominent cleft chin only work to enhance her natural beauty. Harper is blessed with a thick fringe of lashes and light brown hair, boasting shades of auburn red in the summer. A curvy figure earns the woman a lot of tips working as a local tavern maid.
Since the year K17, the pair have been trying to start a family with little success. More recently, Harper has been pressing Wendell about the idea of getting married, something the man has never been keen on, although he has given it some consideration. Wendell feels his relationship with Harper is somewhat toxic. This has stopped him from enjoying her company or hoping that they two of them can sort their differences.
